The production of red blood cells occurs in the bone marrow under the influence of erythropoietin (EPO) hormone. The EPO is produced by the juxtaglomerular cells found in the kidney. The production is due to a response in reduction of oxygen delivery and increased androgen levels. Substrates such as iron and vitamin B12 are also necessary to produce red blood cells.
